Centred Soul-Health & Wellbeing for all the Family have been awarded funding to offer a much needed part funded, counselling service, for those who have been affected by a traumatic birth and/or perinatal (antenatal/postnatal) mental health issues.

What is Birth Trauma?
Birth Trauma is defined as "Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) that occurs after childbirth".

Birth Trauma is associated with many factors:

Lengthy labour or short and very painful labour

Induction of labour
-
Poor pain relief
-
Loss of control
-
Lack of communication/ Not being listened to

High levels of medical intervention

Traumatic or emergency deliveries, such as an emergency caesarean section

Impersonal treatment or issues with the attitudes of a staff member during your labour/birth

Lack of information/education or explanation
-
Lack of privacy and dignity
-
Fear for baby's safety
-
Stillbirth
-
Baby having a disability, as a result of birth trauma
-
Baby staying in SCBU/NICU
-
Poor postnatal care

Previous trauma
What is Perinatal Mental Health Illness?
Perinatal mental health refers to a woman’s mental health during pregnancy and the first year after birth.
This includes mental illness existing before pregnancy, as well as illnesses that develop for the first time, or are greatly exacerbated in the perinatal period.
Examples of perinatal mental illness include:

antenatal depression

postnatal depression
-
anxiety
-
perinatal obsessive compulsive disorder

postpartum psychosis
-
post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).
These illnesses can be mild, moderate or severe, requiring different kinds of care or treatment. (Maternal Mental Health Alliance)
**We are aware that everyone's experience is different & we are also aware that many men and women continue to seek support in relation to a trauma related to loss of an unborn baby, ectopic pregnancy, repeated miscarriage and/or difficulty to conceive. These difficulties may not be listed in the definition of Birth Trauma or Perinatal, but we feel that supports should be offered to those who experience these difficulties too.
